Shadow Tower

The Shadow Tower stands at the western end of the Wall, a fortress of dark stone perched above the deep chasm of the Gorge. It is the farthest outpost of the Night's Watch from Castle Black, and its primary duty is to defend the Bridge of Skulls, the only crossing over the Gorge for many leagues. The tower's position makes it a natural target for wildling raiders seeking to bypass the Wall's main defenses.

Command and Garrison

Ser Denys Mallister commands the Shadow Tower, a veteran ranger who has spent decades on the Wall. He is described as a seasoned commander, more fighter than scholar, in contrast to Maester Mullin who serves as the tower's healer and counselor. The garrison is perpetually undermanned, a problem that worsens as the Watch's numbers dwindle. When Jon Snow begins reopening abandoned castles along the Wall, he dispatches men to the Shadow Tower, including Halder and Toad, but Ser Denys complains that the reinforcements are insufficient and untrained. He writes to Jon that he had hoped for "men of the Night's Watch, trained and disciplined, whose loyalty I should never have reason to doubt."

The Bridge of Skulls

The Bridge of Skulls is the Shadow Tower's most critical defensive point. It spans the Gorge, a deep chasm that otherwise blocks passage around the Wall's western end. Wildling raiders, particularly those led by the Weeper, have repeatedly attempted to force the bridge. Bowen Marsh received a head wound defending it, losing part of an ear. Jon Snow later learns that the Weeper means to try the bridge again, and he acknowledges that the attack will come, though he believes it will be a diversion from a heavier blow elsewhere. The bridge's name reflects the grim history of battles fought there, where the dead accumulate like the skulls that give the crossing its name.

Role in the Watch's Strategy

Under Jon Snow's command, the Shadow Tower becomes part of a broader effort to re-garrison the Wall. Jon sends men west to reinforce Ser Denys, and he plans to open more forts to distribute the Watch's thin strength. The Shadow Tower's rangers are essential for scouting the haunted forest and the mountains beyond the Gorge, where wildlings mass. Ser Denys reports seeing fires in the mountains, indicating that the free folk are gathering for another assault. Jon relies on the Shadow Tower to hold the western flank while Eastwatch guards the east and Castle Black anchors the center. The tower's survival is tied to the Watch's ability to feed and supply its far-flung garrisons, a challenge that grows more desperate as winter approaches.
